The Avebury and Stonehenge Archaeological and Historical Research Group (ASAHRG) is an extension of the Avebury Archaeological and Historical Research Group (AAHRG). We undertake research across the whole World Heritage Site and its near environs. We have been involved in the governance of the World Heritage Site since 1993.

AAHRG (1993-2014)

The creation of AAHRG was recommended by the first WHS Management Statement for Avebury (English Heritage, 23rd Sept 1992), which referred to it as a co-ordination group for archaeologists and historians to be built from an existing group, the Avebury Environs Forum (AEF). The first meeting of AAHRG was jointly held with the AEF on 18th March 1993 although the AEF continued thereafter as a separate organisation.

AAHRG played an important role in the management of the Avebury WHS throughout its history. Major contributions include the Group’s production of the Avebury Archaeological Research Agenda in 2001 (the first Archaeological WHS Research Agenda globally), and its expert advice in drafting both editions of the Avebury Management Plan (1998, 2005).

ASAHRG (2014-present)

The current research group was established following recommendations to extend it to include the Stonehenge part of the WHS. ASAHRG held its first meeting in February 2014 and is building on the foundations and substantial achievements of AAHRG to deliver similar benefits across the whole WHS. Our members were key contributors to the first joint Stonehenge and Avebury Research Framework published in 2016, as well as the 2015 joint Management Plan for Avebury and Stonehenge.
